Board of Trustees

The Academy's new governance arrangements came into effect on 1st April 2011.

The newly appointed Board of Trustees are responsible for all formal governance arrangements.

College and Faculty presidents will no longer be Academy Trustees but all will be the nominated representative of their organisation on the Academy Council which will have responsibility for all healthcare and NHS policy matters.

The Trustees

Walter Merricks, CBE, Chairman

Walter is currently also chair of the Office of the Health Profession Adjudicator. He had been the founding chief ombudsman of the Finacial Ombudsman Service, prior to this he was Insurance Ombudsman. Walter qualified as a solicitor and had a career in legal world before these posts.  

Paul Coombes

Paul was a Director at McKinseys and is currently Chairman of the Centre for Corporate Governance at the London Business School. He was a member of the initial group devising the Academy’s new governance arrangements.

Pamela Charlwood

Pamela has extensive experience as health service manager. She has been a chief executive of a health authority and of the Institute of Health Service Management. She is currently a non-executive director of a Foundation Trust.

Howard Young

Howard is a surgeon by training. He was previously the Vice Dean for Wales of Postgraduate Medical Education and a non-executive director of Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust
