IMGs and Medical Examinations

The full title of the project is:

Research to identify linguistic and cultural features of face to face postgraduate medical examinations which contribute to the higher failure rate of International Medical Graduates and graduates from minority backgrounds trained in the UK.

Project aims:

  • Identify the linguistic/ cultural features of face to face postgraduate medical examinations (specifically the CSA module of the MRCGP) which contribute to the higher failure rate of International Medical Graduates and graduates from minority backgrounds trained in the UK
  • Produce a user friendly analytic framework for assessors, trainers and registrars
  • Identify how the methodology and framework could be used/adapted for the MRCP PACES setting
  • Produce awareness raising training materials based on the framework which could be used to train postgraduate doctors in primary care and to offer to Deaneries, training and preparation courses for Membership examinations, and e-learning sources
This project is being done in partnership with the Royal College of Physicians of London.  
It began in January 2011 and the planned completion date is January 2013.
